Lone Pine Lodge is a single-storey semi-detached house in Teluk Intan, Perak. Its modest profile blends in with the surrounding single-storey homes, while its reconfigured interior brings in more natural light and creates more generous spaces than its predecessor. The structural walls of the house are hollow concrete blocks manufactured in nearby Simpang Pulai, and the roof structure consists of recycled cengal timber beams from demolished buildings in the region. A roof held up by 2 dramatic cantilevered concrete beams greets you as you enter the property, creating a generous uninterrupted front porch.

As you enter the house you pass through an intimate corridor flanked by the 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms, before emerging into an airy double height living/dining hall. The concrete block walls and cengal timber rafters are left exposed, with chipboard panels occupying the spaces between each rafter. Window openings have been carefully calibrated to bring in enough natural light while shielding the spaces from the intense heat in this region. Unapologetically raw, the house is a juxtaposition of warm and cool materials, cozy and airy spaces. A mezzanine space sits above the bathrooms, accessible by a steel and timber ladder.

A selection of custom timber furniture made from the same recycled cengal was crafted by local carpenters, from the dining table and stools to clothing racks. Lone Pine Lodge demonstrates that surprisingly generous and dramatic spaces can be created within small footprints, using local and recycled materials.
